Veterans Benefit Programs

The VA has three main divisions that administer its benefits programs:

  • The Veterans Benefits Administration (VBA)
  • The Veterans Health Administration (VHA)
  • National Cemetery Administration (NCA)

While there are many detailed programs available based on service and other criteria, in general these departments offer assistance with:

  • Medical care, including prescription services
  • Nursing-home care
  • Mental-health care, including services for alcohol and drug addiction and for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
  • Rehabilitation services
  • Readjustment counseling
  • Trauma counseling
  • Bereavement counseling
  • Disability compensation
  • Pension programs
  • Survivors’ benefits
  • Vocational and employment services
  • Veteran-owned business support
  • Education support
  • Home-loan guaranty programs
  • Housing assistance
  • Life insurance
  • Minority, female and homeless veteran outreach and support
  • Cemetery and burial services

It is important that veterans, along with dependents and survivors apply to the VA for all possible benefits. Individual states may also provide supplemental or additional benefits above and beyond federal benefits. It is important that you check with your state veterans’ agencies to determine what additional state veterans’ benefits may be available to you.

Board of Veterans’ Appeals (BVA)

If you have applied for benefits and been denied, the usual procedure is an appeal to the Board of Veterans’ Appeals. You may request a hearing for your case. The next stage of appeal allows you to request reopening or reconsideration of a BVA decision or you may appeal to the US Court of Appeals for Veterans Claims (CAVC). You can even appeal to the US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit and finally to the US Supreme Court. All of these options require the filing of specific documents within specific time periods and it is important to have experienced counsel helping you along the way.
